Northern Lights Vigil
Northern Lights Vigil
for Islenki Flautukorinn (Icelandic Flute Ensemble)
Olafsfjordur, Iceland - Listhust Residency - Seven nights were documented in the pursuit of the Northern Lights. Although they remained hidden, time stagnated, revealing an opportunity for meditation on the Icelandic landscape. Each night is represented by different sounds from the ensemble, though for nearly every night, the music hovers around a single chord. Duets of live-speech and piccolo intercept the music, where piccolo mimics the natural contours of Icelandic speech. The concept of expansion and contraction govern the overall construction, creating a profoundly introspective atmosphere, a remnant of the sea.
